How to Eliminate Water Weight

Overview
Whether you need to get a motivating jump start on a long-term weight loss program or you simply want to slim down for a big event, you can lose excess water weight through simple lifestyle changes. Over time, these changes can also help you shed fat for lasting results. Avoid over-the counter diuretic pills. Although they may flush excess water for a short period of time, long-term dietary strategies provide a safer and more effective alternative.
Step 1
Drink more water. It sounds counter intuitive, but drinking more water signals to your body that the perceived drought is over, resulting in a release of stored fluids. The National Academy of Sports Medicine recommends drinking 96 oz. daily. As an added bonus, drinking more water can help you shed fat as well. A study published in the December 2003 issue of "The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism" found that drinking about 68 oz. of water a day can burn as many as 400 calories.
Step 2
Reduce your sodium intake to see a reduction in stored water weight. Salt attracts water, which is why after a sodium-laden Chinese dinner, you cannot get enough to drink. The current recommendation for healthy adults is no more than 2,300 mg of sodium daily. According to the Mayo Clinic, 77 percent of Americans' sodium intake comes from processed foods. Try to consume a plant-based, whole foods diet to keep sodium intake in check.
Step 3
Increase your fiber intake slowly up to the recommended daily amount--25 grams for women and 35 grams for men. Like salt, fiber attracts water, but unlike salt, fiber then carries it out of the body. Fresh fruit and vegetables are an excellent source of fiber, and, given their high water content, further aid in eliminating water weight.
Step 4
Eat mildly diuretic foods such as cabbages, leeks, parsley and melons. In her acclaimed book, "French Women Don't Get Fat," French foodie Mireille Guiliano includes a recipe for what she calls Magical Leek Soup, a simple combination of fresh, washed leeks boiled for about 30 minutes, with the broth then drained out. According to Guiliano, drinking the broth helps release stored water weight and is a secret staple among French women.

Water is the best fluid to the flush toxins from your body...

Water is essential for everything your body does. In fact, you are more than 70 percent water! Nutrient absorption, blood flow, respiration, elimination, and your ability to see and hear require adequate consumption of pure, clean water. Your body cannot effectively store the water you need throughout the day. Drink at least eight glasses of water every day.

The first key to getting the water you need is to find out how much your body requires. To calculate your personal water requirements: Divide your weight in pounds by 2. The answer equals the minimum number of ounces of water per day your body needs just to function normally.
